That said, it’s still a pretty fun story, full of charm and excitement, and I like where it leaves Yuffie. INTERmission feels like content that was left on the cutting room floor, stitched back together, and presented as a side story. Overall, I couldn’t help comparing INTERmission to a highlight reel of deleted scenes you watch after watching a movie: they’re great scenes and you can appreciate why they were made, but you can also understand why they were cut. Quality-wise, INTERmission could have fit in the main story, but pacing-wise, I can see why it wasn’t. However, this sequence fails for a few reasons: First, Yuffie is alone, so it lacks the world building and character bonding elements that justified their presence in the main story Second, these optional challenges and monster fights feel just above Yuffie’s ability to beat them, which is a strange way to introduce Yuffie and begin her adventure and Third, the rest of INTERmission is mostly linear, so its inclusion feels out of place.Ĭonclusion: INTERmission does improve when Yuffie is teamed up with another character, but unfortunately, the roughly ten hour experience never fully recovers from its awkward pacing, is strangely disconnected from events in the main story, and just when it starts making its own emotional beats, the credits roll, and its over. Similar to several locations interspersed throughout FF7R, Yuffie’s adventure begins in an open exploration area that contains additional activities. Make sure to keep watching after the credits for some exclusive scenes! Part of the fun of playing INTERmission is learning how it connects to the main story, but it can be enjoyed separately. Lows: While I can praise Final Fantasy VII Remake for its expert story telling and its “ebb and flow” pacing, for hiding the grind, and taking us on an “emotional rollercoaster ride,” and can criticize it for “some difficulty spikes and frustrating fights that seem to come out of nowhere,” INTERmission is nearly the opposite: it is full of aggravating moments and lacks the elegant pacing of the main story.ĭavPoint: INTERmission begins when Yuffie arrives in Sector 7 to meet up with (a different faction of) Avalanche, who have agreed to help her infiltrate Shinra headquarters and steal some Materia. This is Wutai ninja Yuffie Kisaragi (pronounced Yoo-fee) Spoiler Warning: It will be difficult to relate the highs and lows of INTERmission without giving away some details of FF7R, but I’ll try to minimize spoilers as much as possible. Coming off the gaming high of playing FF7R, I was expecting greatness with INTERmission, and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed. After I finally got my hands on a PS5 ( last August) I upgraded my PS4 version of FF7R to the PS5 version, but I’ve been saving the “INTERmission” side story content until now. My Experience: My love affair with Final Fantasy VII has hit a rough spot. Intergrade includes the “FF7R Episode INTERmission,” a separate story experience starring the ninja Yuffie, concurrent with events in the PS4 version. After writing my Final Fantasy VII Remake Review and beating Yuffie’s side story, I’m ready to review INTERmission.ĭavPoint: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is the upgraded version of FF7R, exclusive to PS5 and PC, which boasts higher graphics and framerate settings than the PS4 release. Not only was Final Fantasy VII Remake (FF7R) a fantastic new way to experience a classic RPG, it featured award winning* music, amazing graphics, innovative gameplay, deeper characterizations, and an expanded narrative. I have now played Final Fantasy VII (PlayStation, PC, June 25, 1998) eight times and the Remake (PS4, ApPS5, June 10, 2021) twice.
